Each of the teams made a small change to their uniforms for '79-80, making the '78-79 WHA shots easier to spot.

It's a shame what happened to the Jets. Left alone, they might have been one of the better NHL squads, but a lot of NHL owners were pretty vindictive to the WHA clubs because of what had happened to player salaries. They stripped them pretty clean.

The other WHA set out there is a '73-74 Quaker Oats panel set. That and an OPC poster set is all you could really get for '73-74.1967ershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13145022218460291801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3417186274715068618.post-52920139225792727002012-01-30T16:53:51.361-05:002012-01-30T16:53:51.361-05:00There are very few cards in 79-80 set of ex-WHA te...There are very few cards in 79-80 set of ex-WHA teams because of the self imposed choas of the 1979 Expansion. The Whaler set was 5 cards, Nords and Oilers 4 cards, and Jets with 3 cards. The reason being is that each team was only allowed to keep two position players and two goalies from there 78-79 teams (3 teams even passed on keeping the second goalie). I assume at the time of printing there very small remants of WHA teams. All other WHA players had to go to the NHL team that originally held their rights (this why Bobby Hull shows up as BlackHawk). The old WHA teams then had to rebuild via an expansion draft (i.e. get rid of the big contracts of never weres and has beens). Some players were able to return to there old team with very creative trades (draft picks for NOT reclaiming somebody). But it wasn't pretty for the "new" teams those first years, if your protected selections didn't pan out as the Winnipeg Jets found out.Douglashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01050857323785108411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3417186274715068618.post-62213943918669600312012-01-30T14:59:07.098-05:002012-01-30T14:59:07.098-05:00The 79-80 cards have a few players in their WHA un...The 79-80 cards have a few players in their WHA uniforms. For some reason, I really enjoy the WHA cards, and the hi-number OPC-only NHL cards of the 70s. Lots of players I never heard of, and the card designs of the OPC hi numbers are just slightly different than the cards that parallel the Topps sets.Eric C.
