If memory serves, a local Kmart in SoCal was still selling these sets til the mid 80's for, like you said, a quarter a piece. Not only were they at the Kmart by my house, the LCS I use to go to when we lived in El Paso had a pile of these from all different years and sets and I think none were more than a dollar.
